SF double murder suspect spent time in psychiatric hospital | Crime
A nationwide alert has been sent out to police to be on the lookout for a double murder suspect out of Santa Fe.
Santa Fe Sheriff's deputies, state and Santa Fe police and U.S. Marshals were taking special precautions as they search for Arthur "Arturo" Anaya, 54 on Wednesday.
Officials said they do not know how he is going to behave because of his history of mental illness.
Anaya allegedly shot and killed Theresa Vigil, 51, and her daughter's boyfriend, Austin Urban, 16, on Monday after confronting the victims about collecting rent.
Wanted posters show a $1 million nationwide arrest warrant for Anaya.
"This information has been sent to every law enforcement agency in the country. They receive it through tele-type, it tells them this individual is wanted in New Mexico for two counts of murder…gives a description and a photograph," said Major Ken Johnson wit the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department.
Records show that Anaya has a criminal history dating back 25 years.
In 1994, Anaya went on a crime spree and was arrested for robbery, false imprisonment and a felon in possession of a gun.
He spent years at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute in Las Vegas. Anaya was then sent to prison in 2009.
Anaya was originally supposed to serve 40 years but Judge Michael Vigil chose to suspend 22 years of his sentence for good time served.
Santa Fe deputies said they have not received any tips concerning Anaya's whereabouts and need the public's help.
Anaya is described as 5'6", 190 lbs. brown eyes with graying hair.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Arthur Anaya is asked to call 911 or the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office at (505) 428-3720.
