Santa Fe Community Farm and The Food Depot in Search of Volunteers For A Great Cause

Santa Fe Community Farm and The Food Depot in Search of Volunteers For A Great Cause

The Food Depot in Santa Fe is encouraging residents to volunteer at the Santa Fe Community Farm.

The farm helps The Food Depot distribute through 135 partner agencies to people who are hungry. The farm is in need of volunteers willing to plant, weed, compost, and all tasks associated with growing fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Food Depot provides hot food to 135 not-for-profit agencies including emergency food pantries, hot meal programs, homeless shelters, youth programs, senior centers, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons. The food bank distributes an average of 300,000 pounds of food and household products each month, providing more than 400,000 meals to people in need - the most vulnerable of our community – children, seniors, working families and those in ill health.

NM selling leftover deer and javelina hunting permits

NM selling leftover deer and javelina hunting permits

Hunters still have a chance to get a license to hunt deer or javelina in the 2013-2014 season. The New Mexico Game and Fish Department is holding an online sale later this month of more 2,500 deer hunting licenses and nearly 900 javelina licenses.

The department says that each year there are leftover licenses from the department's annual drawing for hunting permits, especially in the case of javelinas. Javelinas area hog species found state-wide.

The sale starts at 10 a.m. on June 26 and is open to all New Mexicans. An online account is required to purchase a hunting license; more information can be found on the department's web site. Permits become available for purchase by anyone, including out-of-state residents, on June 27 at 10 a.m.

New Roadway Improvements for Camino de Las Crucitas

New Roadway Improvements for Camino de Las Crucitas

Ribbon cutting for the Camino de Las Crucitas pedestrian and bicycle improvements will be held Friday, June 14 at 4 pm.

The ribbon cutting for the Camino de Las Crucitas will be held between Graham Avenue and Michelle Drive Santa Fe, NM. Parking will be available at the Frank Ortiza Dog Park across Graham Avenue.

The project was funded through the City of Santa Fe Roadway impact fees.

City representatives were contacted by residents living close to the main dog park and were concerned by the immense amount of car traffic.

“We put speed humps in and it’s a nice new urban amenity that the residents have here,” said Patti Bushee, city counselor, “it’s a safer way to ride or walk to work or even to the Dog Park or downtown.”

Fly Fishing Returns to Sipapu

Fly Fishing Returns to Sipapu

Sipapu will resume its popular weekly series of free fly fishing clinics to teach local residents the basics of the sport.

Lessons are taught by Taos resident and professional fly fishing instructor Dan Holden.

““These clinics teach people fly fishing fundamentals, like how to use the equipment and how to cast,” Holden said. “At the end of the class, we guarantee that participants will have the knowledge they need to go fly fishing and to have a good time doing it.”

Sipapu administrators say the decision to resume the free sessions came in response to a large turnout the resort saw last year.

“What makes this area so amazing is the diversity of fishing,” Holden said. “In the same body of water, you can catch multiple species of trout and cutthroat all in the same day.
