Man arrested in Chimayo shooting death

New Mexico State Police say a Chimayo man was killed Tuesday night in a shooting on NM 76.

Police say they were called to the scene and found two men on the road near a home.

After securing the scene, officers identified the two men as Hector Martinez, 29, and his father Zacharias Martinez, 56, both of Chimayo.

Both men had been shot with a small caliber weapon.

Hector Martinez succumbed to the gunshot wound at the scene, while his father, Zacharias Martinez, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper leg area.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to take over the investigation and process the scene.

As a result, Roy Martinez, 54, of Chimayo was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery with a weapon enhancement and tampering with evidence.

Police say Roy Martinez told investigators that the two men were assaulting his nephew when he shot them.

An investigation is continuing.
