NM Red Cross volunteers to Tampa for storm prep

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Four New Mexico Red Cross volunteers are heading to Florida as the charitable group gears up for a major tropical storm headed for the state.

The volunteers are part of the group's disaster action team.

The team responds to disasters locally and across the nation and handle shelters that care for large numbers of people.

The volunteers are from Los Lunas, Farmington and Espanola.

Santa Clara Pueblo residents hunker down in face of possible flooding

Santa Clara Pueblo residents are getting prepared for a possible flooding disaster Thursday.

That's because the area was hit by a wall of water that came off the nearby Las Conchas burn scar Wednesday night - and forecasts call for possible rain Thursday and through the weekend.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 was at the pueblo on Saturday, as leaders told U.S. Senator Tom Udall about their fears of flooding.

We are told there were voluntary evacuations there Wednesday night, but the flooding did not damage any homes.

NM drought will not hinder summer activities

NM drought will not hinder summer activities

Despite the dry conditions, New Mexico residents are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities. Last week a joint press conference was held to remind New Mexicans state parks and recreation facilities are opened throughout the state.

New Mexico is experiencing a drought with precipitation lower than normal. State Engineer Scott Verhines said La Niña is to blame for the dry winter months, but weather patterns should change during the summer.

Snow is falling in Santa Fe

The dramatic weather change on the way has already hit Santa Fe.

The slow-moving storm is bringing rain and snow showers to parts of central and northern New Mexico.

Snow can be seen falling in the photo to the left in Santa Fe's City Different.

The storm is expected to drop temperatures from Monday to Wednesday.

New Mexico Roads is reporting snow falling heavily from Taos Canyon to Eagle Nest on US 64 and from Bobcat Pass to Eagle Nest on NM 38.

There are also difficult driving conditions on NM 434 between Black Lake and Agua Fria and on I-25 from North Raton to Raton Pass.

All drivers are encouraged to proceed with caution and reduce speed while crews are working to plow and salt the roads.
